Articling should be an eye-opening experience, but not in the negative sense. It should help you see clearly and understand all of your options. You should get a taste of several different areas of intellectual property law and get a chance to prove your mettle. That's the experience we seek to give to our articling students.
At MBM there are a number of career paths that you can follow. We're committed to preparing our articling students for a rich future in intellectual property, a field in constant evolution that has several tangents. Your articling experience with us will be intensive and stimulating.
Here's what to expect:
- you will work on a rotation basis through our four core departments: Patents, Trademarks,Legal and Litigation.
- you'll work on a team with other professionals consisting of lawyers, patent and trademark agents, paralegal staff, and other specialists who have a wide range of expertise in the areas of biochemistry, pharmaceuticals, mechanical and civil engineering, electronics, e-commerce, computer and communication technologies.
- you will receive extensive training and are expected to be an important contributor to the continued success of MBM, as in a proper apprenticeship. We hire with a view to retaining you as a future associate of the firm.
- you will do "grunt-work", but you will see that everyone in our firm does it too. You will be expected to roll up your sleeves like the rest of us.
- you will not be put on a diet of caffeine and tied to your desk. You will have a life outside of the office. Balance is the key.
- if you apply yourself diligently during your tenure here, you will have acquired the necessary skills to be a successful intellectual property lawyer with many options open to you.
