Carly Horvath, Ph.D.

Intellectual Property Lawyer

Carly started at MBM in June of 2020 as a summer student while completing her JD at Western University. She has now transitioned to an Associate Lawyer, assisting the litigation department in IP matters related to patents, trademarks, copyright, and industrial designs, specifically assisting with legal research, drafting cease and desist letters, reviewing agreements, domain name disputes, trademark opposition proceedings, and website terms and conditions/privacy policies. Prior to law school, Carly completed a Ph.D. in Infection and Immunity.

During her doctoral studies, her scientific research centred on the modulation of respiratory mucosal immunity in the context of M. tuberculosis infection. Specifically, Carly’s expertise is in vaccine design, respiratory immunology, allergic asthma and cigarette smoke effects on immune cell geography. Throughout her Ph.D., Carly worked as a teaching assistant for McMaster University’s third-year undergraduate virology class.

Carly’s technical experience involves a broad array of molecular and immunological assays, including flow cytometry, histological staining and scoring, ELISAs, Western blotting, PCR, cellular isolation and purification techniques, in vitro cell culture, bacterial culture techniques, and in vivo models. Carly was also qualified to work with Biosafety Level 3 pathogens. she has co-authored several research papers in various peer-reviewed journals, including Mucosal Immunology, Frontiers Immunology, and Journal of Immunology. She is also a co-author of book chapters and review articles related to her research.

After her Ph.D., Carly worked as a scientific editor for international scientists seeking to publish their work in high-quality scientific peer-reviewed journals. During this phase of her career, she used her technical background and attention to detail to help revise substantive scientific content and polish manuscripts within the life sciences for publication.

After completing her articling term, Carly hopes to achieve a fulfilling legal career by blending her scientific background and editing experience with her passion for Intellectual Property law.

Outside of work, Carly enjoys gardening, skiing, and travelling.
