Susan Chao
Susan Chao's practice is
focused on intellectual property portfolio management
including all areas relating to the worldwide transfer and
acquisition of intellectual property, and the review of
agreements, such as license agreements for same. Susan also
routinely addresses client needs in respect of legal issues
relating to patents , such as inventorship, ownership, and due
diligence. She regularly counsels clients on the filing and
prosecution of industrial designs, and has experience in
Canadian and foreign patent prosecution.
In addition to her patent
expertise, Susan is involved in all aspects of defending and
protecting client's trademark rights in opposition and
expungement proceedings, including negotiating settlement
agreements.
Prior to joining MBM,
Susan worked in community based organizations providing legal
information and services, such as McGill Legal Information
Clinic and Project Genesis. Susan is a regular lecturer at the
University of Ottawa on plant breeders' rights and trade
secrets as part of a course on intellectual property law as it
relates to biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.
