Dr. Emma Macfarlane
Emma Macfarlane's practice focuses on the drafting and
prosecution of patent applications for both Canadian and
international clients in diverse technologies including
chemical, pharmaceutical, and molecular biology
technologies, medical devices and "green" technologies. As part of her practice, she also
advises clients on patent strategy and intellectual property portfolio
development, invention disclosure and research
documentation, and inventorship. Emma works closely with
clients to ensure that their intellectual property
portfolios align with their
business objectives and corresponds regularly with a wide
network of foreign associates to manage the worldwide
prosecution of clients’ patent portfolios.
Prior to joining MBM, Emma
spent several years in academic research acquiring a wide
range of experience in biochemistry, organic chemistry,
molecular biology, genetics and microbiology. Emma has been
involved in a number of research projects relating to the
design of synthetic pathways to include enzyme-catalyzed
reactions for the production of optically pure molecules,
rational protein design, and structure/function studies of
enzymes and membrane proteins with a view to facilitating and
guiding drug design. She is co-author of a number of
scientific publications relating to mechanisms of bacterial
antibiotic resistance, protein engineering, structure/function
of enzymes and bio-organic synthesis.
Emma is a Registered
Canadian and United States Patent Agent.
