Dr. Margaret Swain
Margaret Swain is Chair of the firm’s Patent Department. She
has extensive experience in the drafting and prosecuting of complex patent
applications. Her drafting experience ranges widely including neuroscience, all
forms of biotechnology, pharmaceutical, molecular biology, synthetic biology, bioinformatics,
diagnostic tests and kits as well as polymers and medical device technologies.
Her range of patent expertise also extends to transgenic animals, molecular
therapeutics, natural products compositions, genes, novel proteins, nerve
regeneration, spinal cord repair, stroke treatments, drug screening methods, and
agricultural and veterinary products as well as “cleantech and green
technologies” such as waste water treatment process patents,
plasma gasification and LED lighting.
Margaret also oversees contractual matters relating to the
protection and commercialization of inventions. Along with performing IP due
diligence reviews, she also provides strategic analysis for both developing and
existing patent portfolios. Due to the depth and breadth of her patent
experience, Margaret is one of Canada’s most sought after bio-pharma patent
drafters and serves as a member of MBM’s Board of
Directors.
Margaret is the author of many scientific and legal
publications, and in recent years, she has published extensively in the area of
biotechnology and pharmaceutical law. She is co-author, with Randall Marusyk, of
the upcoming publication Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Law in Canada.
She has also lectured on the law of property and the patenting of human tissue
and genetic material.
